Reproduction of 93 portraits by the artist, including 60 black plates of drawings, lithographs and paintings and 33 plates of paintings in colour.
Edition  2833 / 2850, finished printing on 20 December 1954. Ateliers Mourlot Frères printed the original lithograph, cover and colour plates. The phototypesetting was done by Louis Duval and the typography by Imprimerie Union.
The first edition of this work was composed entirely by Henri Matisse, who chose the works himself. The cover is a composition by the artist, executed especially for this work, as is the original lithograph printed as the frontispiece, with an introduction by Matisse.
